Itinerary

A day with us — one of many possibilities

Sample itinerary. Every tour is customized to your interests.

6:30 AM

Departure from Tokyo

Early train from Tokyo toward Nikko (~2 hours). Your guide will brief you on the mountain's history and spiritual significance during the journey.

1

8:30 AM

Tobu-Nikko Station

Arrive at Tobu-Nikko Station and board the local bus up to the Oku-Nikko highlands (~50 minutes) via the dramatic Irohazaka switchback road — 48 hairpin turns climbing into the mountains.

2

9:20 AM

Futarasan Shrine Chugushi

Register at the shrine and receive your omamori (good luck charm) before passing through the sacred torii gate to begin the ascent.

3

9:30 AM

The Ascent

Steep climb through dense ancient cedar forest, passing torii gates marking your spiritual progression. From station 6 onward, hands-on scrambling over large boulders — Lake Chuzenji emerging far below as you gain height.

4

12:30 PM

Mt. Nantai Summit 2,486m

360° views: Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and on clear days, Mt. Fuji on the horizon. Visit the Okumiya shrine, ring the summit bell, and see the iconic 3.5m iron sword planted in the rock.

5

1:00 PM

Lunch at the Summit

Packed lunch at the summit. Few places in Japan offer a finer setting for a meal.

6

2:00 PM

The Descent

Retrace the route back down to Futarasan Shrine Chugushi. Steep and demanding — your guide sets a safe, comfortable pace throughout.

7

5:00 PM

Lake Chuzenji & Kegon Falls

Explore the lake shoreline or descend to the base of Kegon Falls — a 97-metre cascade viewed from a dedicated platform reached by elevator.

8

5:30 PM

Return to Tokyo

Bus back to Tobu-Nikko Station and train to Tokyo, arriving around 7:30 PM.

Description

Journey to one of Japan's most sacred mountains — Mt. Nantai (男体山), a towering volcanic peak rising 2,486 meters above Lake Chuzenji in the heart of Nikko National Park. Listed among Japan's 100 Famous Mountains and deeply connected to the UNESCO World Heritage Futarasan Shrine, this hike is far more than a climb — it's a spiritual pilgrimage that monks have walked since the 8th century.

With an experienced local guide by your side, you'll ascend through ancient forests, scramble over volcanic rock, and reach a summit crowned by a sacred shrine, an iconic iron sword pointing skyward, and breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Chuzenji, the Nikko mountain range, and — on clear days — as far as Mt. Fuji.
